Nativities

On Thursday morning, Reception and older had their nativity at St. Matthews Church. The children all did a great job and they truely told the Christmas Story complete with a prayer at the end.  Thankful that my boys get to be a part of a school that has a Christian perspective.

At the beginning, I slipped up to the front and grabbed a quick pic of Ben.  He was so excited!

We sat by one of Nate's friends from school.

If you really zoom in Ben is down at the front singing but it isn't a great shot.
A beautiful church!

Nate's nativity was that afternoon.  They did an amazing job of coordinating the kids.  They could choose whatever they wanted to be and throughout the weeks before they had been making hats for every character so they could play that one.  Nate had decided he wanted to be a wise man.

I love how this year they were both really able to tell the Christmas story.  One morning they both sat at breakfast and talked all the way through the story.  Sweetness from the mouth of children.

Passport, Chipotle and Winter Wonderland

The week before Christmas we headed into London to renew Ben's passport.  Cannot believe that it is time to get his 5 year old passport!!  Where has the time gone?  It is a little early but we need to renew our UK visa and then we are headed to the states so it needed to be done sooner rather than later. We have been talking about making a trip into London without our stroller and we thought this would be the perfect trip.

Here the boys are coloring on the train!  Are these my boys?!  We are definitely in a new phase of coloring, playing independently, etc.  So fun!

We also decided to combine our tradition of going to Chipotle and the Winter Wonderland with this trip.  Here we are at Chipotle.  Silly boy!

Giving thumbs up or thumbs down is quite common here.  We use it a lot as a family to communicate in busy places or when we are far away from each other.  They also like to do it to be funny.

Off to the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park

Ben wanted his pic taken by this guy.

Brother LOVE!

My love!  I am so thankful to get to do life with this guy!

On the train home.  Definitely a win on the no stroller!  Ben did great walking and Nate got carried just a little buy his day.  My big boys!

The First Term

Ben and Nate's first term at St. Matthews has come to an end.  They have both really enjoyed being at school.  There have been some adjustments but overall it has gone great.  Here is a look into a little bit of their lives at school.

Ben's class is the Hedgehogs.  Here they are at welcome time in the morning.  Taking the register (class roll).

I love that it is a church of England school.  They very freely talk about God and pray.  I was leaving on Friday morning and walked by the big hall where they have assembly.  They kids were all singing a praise and worship song!  There are children from so many different nationalities and religions that I am so excited to see what God is going to do through this school.

They both have a book share time where parents stay to read a book to their child.  Ben's is on Tuesday and Nate's is on Friday.  Allen happened to be off this Friday morning.

I generally wake Nate up from nap to go get Ben.  So, he usually rides in the stroller.  However, on this day both strollers were in the car with Allen.  I took the wagon instead. It was a hit!  I was amazed at home many people talked to me about the wagon.  So funny what will bring quiet Brits out of their shell.  I had mum's yelling across the road asking where I had bought the wagon, something that is just not done here.

I have been so blessed to be able to help with Ben and Nate's class.  Here we went up to a little area that has a large clump of trees and they made a little tent.  Ben is being funny in this pic with his sad face.  Check out the next one.

The Heart of Christmas

In early December, I had the awesome privilege of sharing my testimony at our Oasis Christmas Coffee morning.  I was floored and humbled that they would ask me to share.  We wanted to give the ladies all a gift as they left and as always God provided the perfect heart ornament.  We bought 60 of them and there were 61 people including me!  How great of God to allow us to have the perfect amount.  I love to see how God works the details all out.  Here is what I shared.

Merry Christmas!

The heart of Christmas- Oasis 2013

Wow, what an honor and privilege it is to be here today and share with you all what the heart of Christmas is to me!  I love Christmas!  I love the excitement and the anticipation of Christmas day.  I always have, I can remember as a little girl having a really hard time going to sleep on Christmas Eve because I just couldn’t wait to wake up Christmas morning.  Then I would wake up really early on Christmas day, ready to go downstairs and see what presents were there for me.

Now, as a mom, I am on the other side of that excitement.  My boys, Ben and Nate, are VERY excited about Christmas this year.  They have asked for all things star wars and have even made up some star wars things they think would be fun, like a yoda hat and yoda book. Oh, the excitement and joy of Christmas time!

For a long time Christmas was all about me and what I was going to get and what I wanted.  It wasn’t until I really grasped the breadth and depth of God’s love for me at Christmas that I understood the joy behind Christmas.

The heart of Christmas to me is that God sent His one and only son, Jesus, as a baby to earth to grow up and die for me! For my sins, for the many times I am selfish and hurtful and thoughtless to those around me.  God sent his son as a baby so that I might have life eternal with him in heaven.  And not just life eternal but a life filled with peace and love and joy and I did absolutely nothing for this gift!  PEACE, knowing that God has forgiven me, LOVE, knowing that I can do nothing to earn or lose God’s love, JOY, the result of trusting him relinquishing control of my life to Him.  These are free gifts of God given to those who believe in his name and recognize their need of a savior.  I am so thankful that years ago I accepted God’s gift of salvation.

Most of my life, I celebrated Christmas south of the equator in the country of Kenya.  It was hot and sunny at Christmas time.  We wore sundresses and went to the beach.  Then there was a time that I spent Christmas in the states through university and my first year of marriage.  During those years, it was really easy to have the peace, love and joy of God living in me.  Life was good; there were bumps along the way but nothing that really rocked my world.

Then there was the year, I spent Christmas in a war zone, in Iraq as a US Army Nurse.  We got to Baghdad the first week of December, if it had been my choice, I would have just skipped over Christmas all together.  This wasn’t how I was supposed to spend my 2nd Christmas as a married woman.  No Christmas tree, no waking up to presents.  Instead I woke up to go to my 12 hour shift in A&E, to take care of road side bomb victims and children who were in the wrong place at the wrong time or harder still working long hard hours to save the lives of the “bad guys”, who had put the bombs there.  As you can imagine it was a very dark and hard place to be, not full of peace, love and joy.

But as we read earlier, “This baby would be like that bright star shining in the sky that night. A Light to light up the whole world. Chasing away darkness. Helping people to see. And the darker the night got, the brighter the star would shine.”

On the outside it looked like it would be a very dark Christmas.  I was seeing death and destruction all around me.  But the reality was; it was one of the brightest Christmas’ I have ever had because I knew where my hope lay.  My hope is not in this world or in a perfect Christmas.  My hope is in the future.  That the God, who made the heavens and the earth, loved me enough to send his son to die for me and to be the Light that shines in the darkest of places.  God showed me that Christmas that I had to surrender to him and allow him to fill me with his peace, love and joy.  We are told in Jeremiah 29:11 that Gods plans for us are for good and to give us a hope and a future.  My Christmas in Iraq did not come as a surprise to God but was always a part of his good plan for my life.  He used that Christmas and that year to teach me so many things about his love for me and to show me how brightly His light shines!

Once, I had chosen to surrender to his will for me that year, I was filled with His peace, that even when there were guns shots all around He was with me.  His Love-I was reminded of my need for Jesus, and though I have never done some of the terrible things those men did, I am still as sinner in need of a savior.  I was able to care for men and show them the respect and dignity that we all deserve as children of God.  And His Joy-Was I happy all the time? No.  But I had a joy about serving.  I got to cuddle little babies and take care of their wounds so that someday they would get up and run again.

In a little bit, we are going to hear the song, “Mary Did you know?”  Mary had no idea what lay ahead of her, she was happy and engaged and then all of a sudden she was pregnant with the Savior of the world.  Our lives can change in an instant and my prayer for all of us this year is that, we would truly believe the Christmas story and let God’s peace, love, and joy rule in our hearts and homes.  As you leave, we have a little gift for you.  It is a heart ornament. It has the words, peace, love and joy.  As you hang it on your tree or place it somewhere to see it, may it be a reminder of what the heart of Christmas truly is.  Thank you.

Harrods Christmas Grotto 2013

In November, we headed into London to go to Harrods to see Santa with the D's.  The kids all had a blast!  Here we are getting ready to go into London.

Waiting for the train!

They really do an excellent job at Harrods.  There is lots of interactive stuff to do as you wait.  They all got "passports" and got stamps as they went through the line and from Santa.

Earlier in the week the boys made their lists.  Love how everything is linked to Star Wars.

Ben was so proud of his drawings of Santa and his elf.  He also wrote his name.

Last year we did a family photo but this year they wanted to be on their own.  Such big boys!

After Harrods we went to Chipotle!  YUM YUM!  Such a fun little tradition we have started.

Beauty

A few pictures taken on runs recently.  The gray gets to me a bit but if I go for a run it really helps and helps me see the beauty all around me even when it is gray.

And then there are sunny mornings and it is just gorgeous!!

Thanksgiving recap

I'm a bit behind on blogging.  I get motivated and then I think, who really reads this anyways?  So,  I don't blog and then, I have a moment where I enjoy going back and looking at past blog posts and I get motivated again, even if it is just for me!

So, Thanksgiving!  We had a great month of putting on thankful feathers on to Tom the Turkey.  Nate kept calling him a rooster!  This year was really special because we all contributed something each day.  My boys are growing up and I am loving it!

Thanksgiving morning. We had sticky buns and the boys got new Christmas pj's and a Christmas book. Allen got stuff to make chex mix!  Then the boys went off to school.  We also got a call that morning that our friends water had broken and so delivery looked like it would happen that day.  We were on call to watch Eva while the were off to the hospital.

So middle of that afternoon Eva joined us and we became a family of 5 for a little while.  The boys loved having Eva with us.

We celebrated with a big thanksgiving dinner on that Saturday before thanksgiving.  So, just like last year we went to a local restaurant called the Carvery and had dinner there.  Then we came back to our house for dessert.  Here Ben is playing tick tack toe with Caroline who he says is "very pretty".

Eva stayed the night with us and this is breakfast Friday morning. The boys LOVED it!  I had to remind them that Eva was not used to having two little boys in her face all the time.  I am really enjoying that our boys are at the point where we can bless other people and be helpful to others by serving.  A blessing!
